Marcel's sustainable soap mission began at the kitchen table: under the watchful eye of his daughters, he developed soap that smells wonderful, cleans well and is also better for the planet. 'Feel good cleaning', he calls it. But what does Marcel's Green Soap actually mean by sustainable? Read more about it here.
Sustainable priorities
Marcel's Green Soap has a number of priorities in the area of sustainability. These are:
- Packaging (recycled, refillable)
- Ingredients (microplastic free, vegan)
- After use (biodegradable, recyclable packaging)
- Origin (locally produced)
Below we will delve a little deeper into these sustainability themes, and what Marcel's Green Soap is doing to achieve these sustainability goals.
Recycled and recyclable packaging
The light gray appearance and the black cap make the iconic bottles of Marcel's Green Soap the soap stars of the cleaning shelf. And whether you like that light gray color or not, that color contributes to our sustainable soap mission. The bottles are made of recycled plastic that has a light gray color in itself. So we do not add any colorants! Besides the fact that this is the most environmentally friendly way to process recycled plastic into new packaging, this 'colorless' plastic is also easier to recycle. And so the circle is complete.
Refillable
Now that we're talking about the bottles. Did you know that you can refill them? The bottle lasts a very long time, so it's a shame to throw it away after one round, right?! If it were up to Marcel, refilling is the future. And that's why we offer refills for more and more products.
Refilling is the future!

Vegan & microplastic free
Of course, it’s not just about the looks of our soapies. What’s inside the bottles is at least as sustainable as the packaging itself. In our lab, we experiment like crazy to develop the most sustainable soap possible that smells good, works well and is affordable. The result: an ever-expanding collection of home and care products that are vegan and – of course! – have a microplastic-free formula. And where possible: palm oil-free. There’s a lot to say about the latter, read our view on palm oil .
Did you know: Marcel's Green Soap is a sustainable soap, not a 100% natural soap. Tell me more!
At least 95% biodegradable
Our soap mission doesn’t stop after your shower or cleaning session. The soap residue that leaves your home via the drain is at least 95% biodegradable. Is the bottle empty? Refill it! Or: throw the bottle (or empty refill packaging) in the plastic waste, and we will make sure the plastic is recycled!
Locally produced
Did you know that all our products are produced locally? That is to say: right here in the Netherlands. If that isn't sustainable! There is no need for flight shame or unnecessary freight transport to get the bottles onto the shelves. The recycled plastic of our packaging also comes from the Netherlands. So every plastic packaging that you throw away (in the plastic waste of course), could easily transform into a new shampoo bottle from Marcel's Green Soap.
