Helpful cleaning tips for allergy sufferers

Yay! Dust mites are naturally something you want to avoid, especially if you're sensitive to them. We share helpful cleaning tips for those with allergies, but also for anyone who enjoys a clean, dust-free home. And who wouldn't want that?!

Ventilate for fresh air

The number one cleaning tip for allergy sufferers: open your windows, both day and night. This air circulation purifies the air, ensuring a healthy indoor climate at all times.

Turn your duvet over

A neatly made bed gives you an instant hotel feeling, but it's still better to turn your duvet down in the morning. You lose half a liter of moisture during the night—depending on the temperature—and that has to go somewhere. When you turn back your duvet, the lost moisture finds its way out instead of remaining trapped in your mattress and duvet.

Let the laundry dry outside

High humidity in your home is ideally avoided. It causes mold, musty odors, and attracts pests like silverfish. High humidity is especially detrimental to people with allergies. Therefore, it's advisable not to dry your laundry indoors, but rather outside in the fresh air. This prevents the air from becoming too humid and prevents dust and textile fibers from circulating.

Vacuum regularly

It's obvious, of course, but a dust-free home starts with vacuuming. Ideally, a quick daily vacuum, and at least a thorough one once a week. Anything made of fabric attracts dust, so don't forget the sofa, armchairs, cushions, and rugs.

Mop the floor

Carpet isn't recommended if you're sensitive to dust mites, but smooth floors also collect a lot of dust. A quick mop with some all-purpose cleaner once a week will keep the floor dust-free. If you have pets, you'll probably need to do it more often.

Wash your duvets, pillows and blankets

When was the last time you washed your duvet? Don't worry, you're not the only one who (almost) never does. But dust does like to settle in your bed. So wash your duvet, pillows, and blankets twice a year. Especially if you're sensitive to dust mites or have other allergies.

Wash your curtains every now and then

The curtains in your bedroom and living room also catch dust. You can usually wash them at 30 degrees Celsius (check the care label). Hang them slightly damp on the curtain rails, and the wrinkles will naturally fall out (just be sure to open the windows wide to avoid the damp air).

Do not bring dust collectors into your home

One final cleaning tip for those with allergies: keep dust traps to a minimum. So, no jungle of plants on the windowsill, knickknacks on the dresser, or a shag rug on the floor. Upholstered furniture, such as sofas, chairs, or—yes, really—a box-spring bed, isn't exactly allergy-friendly either. And more importantly, they'll mean a lot of extra vacuuming and cleaning. And who wants that, right? Well, except Marcel, that is.
