Are you a fan of our soap bars? Or do you prefer the liquid version? Solid versus liquid soap: what are the pros and cons when it comes to ease of use and sustainability.
What is the difference between solid and liquid soap?
Solid soap is a compact, hard soap, also called a soap bar or soap bar. At Marcel's Green Soap we have shampoo bars , conditioner bars , body bars and hand soap bars in various scents. Unlike liquid soap, no water is added to a soap bar. This makes it compact - handy for travelling! - and very efficient in use. In addition, our soap bars feel wonderfully soft thanks to the addition of extra vegetable glycerine.
Liquid soap comes in a bottle and is – yes – liquid. With a pump or flip-top you dispense the soap and then wash your hands, hair or skin with it. The soap is easy to spread and rinse off.
Ease of use
It is sometimes said that using a soap bar takes some getting used to. You are lathering your hair with a shampoo bar, and it slips out of your hands! And if you forget to store it in a dry place, it slowly 'melts' away. So here is a short instruction (for our shampoo bar): wet your hair well and rub the bar between your hands, so that it foams. Then rub the bar over your hair - from the roots to the ends - and then put the bar aside. Massage the shampoo into your hair and rinse it out well. Finally, it is important that you store your bar in a dry place after showering, for example in a soap dish or tin. In any case, the soap bar must be able to dry well. Liquid soap is the most commonly used type of soap. It is – just like a soap bar – easy to dose and spread well. Unlike a soap bar, you can simply leave the bottle in the shower.
Sustainability
A soap bar is often seen as the most sustainable soap. And that is true, because producing a soap bar requires much less water and energy. In addition, a bar is compact, which means less freight transport is needed and it also lasts three times as long compared to a bottle of liquid soap. Last but not least: our soap bars are packaged plastic-free, which means you contribute to less plastic production and plastic waste. The liquid version could learn a thing or two from that!
However, we dare to say that our liquid variant is also sustainable. Our liquid soapies are all packaged in recycled and recyclable plastic. When you throw the bottle in the plastic waste after use, it can simply be recycled again. It is even better to refill the empty bottle with our refills . Just like our soap bars, refill packaging takes up less space and you save a lot of freight traffic and plastic compared to a new bottle. Do you want to experience how easy refilling is?
