Descale the shower with vinegar and washing up liquid

Descaling the shower head is a chore that needs to be done regularly to ensure your bathroom stays fresh and clean. Lime deposits can quickly build up on tiles, taps and glass shower doors, especially in areas with hard water. These deposits not only look unattractive, but can also affect the functioning of your shower. A mixture of vinegar and washing-up liquid offers an effective solution.

Why descaling is important

Vinegar has been known as a versatile cleaning agent for centuries. This acid is powerful enough to break down minerals such as lime and calcium without harming the environment or your health.

Detergent is designed to remove grease and dirt and when combined with vinegar, it creates a powerful cleaner that can remove even the toughest soap scum and body oils.

What do you need?

In 4 steps to a limescale-free shower

  1. Preparation: Mix equal parts cleaning vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Add a few drops of our dish soap and shake well.
  2. Application: Spray the mixture liberally on all surfaces with limescale. Pay extra attention to the shower head, tiles and glass walls. Let the mixture sit for at least 15 minutes so that it can work properly on the limescale. This gives the vinegar time to break down the minerals, while the detergent dissolves grease and dirt.
  3. Cleaning: Use a soft cloth or sponge to clean the surfaces. You will find that limescale and soap scum come off easier thanks to the action of the mixture. For stubborn stains, you can leave the mixture on longer or repeat the process.
  4. Rinse: Rinse the shower head thoroughly with warm water to remove all residues of the detergent. If you have used detergent from Marcel's Green Soap, your shower will not only be clean, but also smell wonderfully fresh!

Extra sustainable tips from Marcel

  • Prevention is better than cure: To prevent limescale build-up, wipe tiles and glass surfaces dry with a squeegee or dry cloth after every shower. This will minimise mineral build-up and keep your shower cleaner for longer.
  • Clean your bathroom regularly: Make it a habit to clean your shower weekly with this mixture. Regular maintenance with our bathroom cleaner will prevent limescale and soap residues from building up, making cleaning easier and faster.
  • Reuse and recycle: Use refillable spray bottles and buy refills packs to reduce the amount of plastic you use when cleaning.
