Cleaning the shower wall is one of those chores you keep putting off — until the moment you can no longer see through the glass. Sound familiar? Limescale, soap residue and water stains quickly make your shower look dull and dirty. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be complicated to get your shower wall streak-free again.
Why does a shower wall get dirty so quickly?
Every time you shower, a thin layer of water remains on the wall. That water contains minerals (such as lime), and residues of shampoo and soap. These adhere to the glass or plastic and cause that dull haze or white spots. If you do not clean it regularly, it becomes increasingly difficult to remove the deposit.
Cleaning a shower wall: the step-by-step plan
Below you will find a simple but effective step-by-step plan for cleaning your shower wall. Choose the method that suits you.
Step 1: Rinse the wall
Always start by rinsing the shower wall with warm water. This removes loose dirt and loosens the limescale and soap residue.
Step 2: Choose your cleaning agent
Depending on your preference, you have several options:
- Natural vinegar + dishwashing liquid : Mix equal parts natural vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. If necessary, add a few drops of dishwashing liquid — this will enhance the degreasing effect and help even better against soap residue and limescale. Shake well before use!
- Soda : Make a paste of soda and water. This works well against grease and soap residue.
- Marcel's Green Soap Bathroom Cleaner : A powerful, ready-to-use solution specially developed for removing limescale and soap residue.
- Lemon : Also has a mild degreasing effect and leaves a fresh scent.
Spray or rub your chosen product onto the shower wall and let it work for 5 to 10 minutes .
Step 3: Scrub with the right tool
Use a soft sponge or microfiber cloth to clean the wall. Avoid abrasive sponges — they can scratch, especially on plastic shower walls.
Marcel's pro tip: Use a squeegee to immediately remove excess water and loosened dirt while scrubbing.
Step 4: Rinse and dry
Rinse the wall thoroughly with warm water to remove all residues of cleaning agents. Afterwards: always dry ! Use a dry microfiber cloth or a squeegee for this. This prevents new water stains or limescale formation.
Extra tips for a permanently clean shower wall
- Dry the shower wall daily after showering. This will take you 10 seconds and will prevent extra cleaning later.
- Ventilate well after showering to prevent mold and moisture problems.
- Use a coating : Special coatings are available (such as a nano coating) that form a protective layer against dirt and limescale.
- Clean weekly with a durable cleaner such as our bathroom cleaner or diluted vinegar to prevent stubborn stains.
What if the limescale is stubborn?
Sometimes the limescale is so caked on that you need some heavy artillery. Use a mixture of vinegar and dishwashing liquid. Let the mixture sit for at least 15-30 minutes. This gives the vinegar time to break down the minerals, while the dish soap dissolves grease and grime. If necessary, wrap a warm, wet cloth around it to help it soak in more effectively. Rinse well and dry thoroughly.
Make it a routine
Cleaning your shower wall doesn't have to be a chore. By doing it regularly and using the right products, the job will be done in no time. Make it a small habit, and you'll enjoy a fresh, clean shower every day!
