There's nothing quite like the smell of freshly washed clothes. But all that washing has an impact on the planet and the quality of your clothes. That's why we're sharing five washing tips to keep your clothes looking good for longer.
Washing tip #1 Don't wash your clothes too often
Stain? Hop, into the laundry basket! In a hectic life, the washing machine often works overtime. It could be a bit less, because all that washing does not make your clothes look better. Before you know it, your favorite shirt turns into a faded dishcloth. You can often get a stain out by hand and when you leave your clothes outside overnight, they smell wonderfully fresh again in the morning.
Extra tip: hang your clothes in the bathroom during a shower session so that musty odors can evaporate (and the scent of your favorite shower gel can soak in).
Washing tip #2 Not too hot
Washing at high temperatures costs a lot of energy. That is not good for your wallet and the planet, but also not for the quality of your clothes. Most clothes can simply be washed at 30 degrees (or colder). It is advisable to do a boil wash once a month (without clothes) or wash the towels at 60 degrees. This will rinse the washing machine nicely clean.
Washing tip #3 Let it flutter
A dryer may make life easier, but it doesn't make it cheaper. And it's not really sustainable either. Fluttering on the clothesline, your laundry will be at least as dry and a lot less wrinkled. That saves you from having to iron it! Moreover, the quality of your clothes will quickly deteriorate when you use a dryer.
Washing tip #4 Be kind to your laundry
Maybe a no-brainer, but use as few aggressive substances as possible on your laundry. Better to go for a mild detergent to not damage your laundry. We at Marcel's Green Soap recommend the mild detergent of Marcel's Green Soap ;-) But of course any other mild detergent with attention to the planet will do!
Washing tip #5 Inside out
To keep the colour of your clothes as long as possible and prevent wear, there is really only one tip: never wash them. But every piece of clothing craves a wash every now and then. By washing your clothes inside out, you prevent discolouration, wear and white stripes as much as possible. This is especially advisable for jeans - which you should wash as little as possible.
