5 myths about sustainability debunked

The tree-hugger image of sustainable living has thankfully been dusted off, but there are still many myths about sustainability. We are going to do something about that!

1. Sustainable living is expensive

Although the name suggests otherwise, sustainable living does not have to be expensive. You can even save money by making more sustainable choices. Sometimes you have to invest first – such as when purchasing solar panels – but that will pay for itself in the end. And yes, it is true that sustainable products are often (but not always) more expensive to purchase than environmentally harmful alternatives, but you also use them longer. It is not without reason that 'expensive' in sustainability refers to the lifespan (and therefore not to the price 😉 )

2. A sustainable life is not feasible

You don’t have to live off-grid in a self-sufficient yurt to live a sustainable life. Remember: every little bit helps. By making small adjustments to your daily routines, you can make your life more sustainable at your own pace and in your own way. For example, start by separating your waste (if you haven’t been doing so for a long time of course) and choosing environmentally friendly(r) products in the supermarket. Also very easy: use refill packaging to reduce the waste stream. These adjustments will not make much difference to your daily life, but the planet will thank you.

3. You can't achieve anything alone

We understand that it is not really motivating if you are the only one in the street who separates waste, picks up litter from the sidewalk and bravely gets on your bike every morning - even when it is raining. We say: good job! Because imagine that next time your neighbor - inspired by you - takes the bike instead of the car. And as said: every little bit helps. Yes really, a better world starts with you!

4. Sustainable products work less well

It is sometimes thought that sustainable products work less well. Nonsense of course! Just look at our sustainable cleaning products, they clean well and smell wonderful. So why would you still choose environmentally harmful alternatives?

Tip: challenge yourself to make your weekly shopping more sustainable by looking for sustainable(r) alternatives for products you often buy.

5. Bye bye luxury life!

Another myth: those who choose a sustainable life have to say goodbye to the life of luxury. Sure, taking a plane to the sun a few times a year does not fit in with a sustainable life. And spending your entire salary on luxury products does not either. But do we really need that luxury to be happy? The more stuff, the more worries. And close to home (or within train distance) there is also plenty to discover. Less mass, less stuff, less stress. How luxurious does that sound?!
