Powder, liquid, capsules or sheets – the choice is huge when it comes to detergent. But which option is really effective and sustainable? Marcel's Green Soap investigated and opted for liquid detergent with complete conviction. Below we will tell you exactly why we think liquid detergent is the best choice – for a fresh wash and a responsible choice for the planet.
Washing powder: the classic among detergents
Washing powder is a classic that has been used for decades. It is known for its powerful effect, especially against stubborn stains such as mud, grease and grass. According to research by Radar and the Consumers' Association, powder detergent works better on white laundry, because it is often contains bleaching agents that help keep clothes fresh and bright (Radar , Consumers' Association).
However, powder detergent also has a number of disadvantages. At lower temperatures, it does not always dissolve completely, which can leave residues in your washing machine or on your clothes ( Radar ). This can cause blockages and stains, which does not benefit the lifespan of your appliances and clothes. In addition, studies show that some powder detergents contain abrasive ingredients, which can release microplastics in synthetic fabrics (Kassa - BNNVARA). These small particles are washed away with the wastewater and can eventually end up in the environment.
The production of powder detergent also has an impact. It requires high temperatures to process the ingredients, which means the production process uses more energy than liquid detergent (Wirecutter Show Episode 1). While powder generally contains less water and is lighter to transport, its energy-intensive production doesn’t necessarily make it the more sustainable choice.
Liquid detergent: versatile and practical
Liquid detergent has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. One of its biggest advantages is that it dissolves instantly in water, even at low temperatures (Radar). This makes it ideal for short wash cycles and delicate fabrics, where a quick and even distribution of the detergent is essential.
In addition, liquid detergent does not leave powder residue in your washing machine or clothing, so your laundry always comes out of the drum fresh and clean. This not only prevents irritation for people with sensitive skin, but also ensures that your washing machine continues to work properly for longer. In addition, tests show that liquid detergent is gentler on fabrics and colours, so that your clothes stay beautiful for longer (Consumers' Association). In terms of sustainability, liquid detergent has both advantages and disadvantages. The production process requires lower temperatures than powder detergent, which means less energy is needed (Wirecutter Show Episode 1).
However, this does not mean that liquid detergent has no impact. Because it consists largely of water, it is relatively heavy, which affects transport emissions. That is why we at Marcel's Green Soap consciously choose a concentrated formula, so that less packaging and transport is needed to deliver the same number of washes.
Laundry detergent sheets: the innovative newcomer
Lately, laundry detergent sheets have been presented as the sustainable solution. They are compact, lightweight and plastic-free in packaging, which makes them an attractive alternative at first glance. But when we dig deeper, the reality turns out to be less rosy. Several independent tests show that laundry detergent sheets often clean less effectively than liquid or powder detergent (Wirecutter: Laundry Detergent Sheets).
This means you may need an extra wash, which can negate any perceived environmental benefits. In addition, many of these products are sourced from Asia, meaning they have to travel a long way before they reach European stores. This significantly increases their carbon footprint.
While the idea of less packaging waste is appealing, the production of these sheets still uses a lot of water and energy (Wirecutter: Laundry Detergent Sheets). This makes the sustainability of this innovation less self-evident than is often claimed.
Why does Marcel's Green Soap choose liquid detergent?
At Marcel's Green Soap we have carefully considered all factors and have come to the conclusion that liquid detergent currently offers the best balance between effectiveness, ease of use and sustainability. Research and consumer experiences confirm that liquid detergent is not only more effective at low temperatures and shorter wash programs, but is also gentler on fabrics and does not leave powder residue in your machine (Consumers' Association).
In addition, we opt for a concentrated formula to reduce the impact on transport and packaging use. Our bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic and we offer refill options to prevent plastic waste. In this way, we ensure that you not only have a fresh, clean wash, but also make a conscious choice for the environment.
