How to make your cleaning routine more sustainable

How sustainable is your cleaning routine? We show you how to create a more conscious routine with 7 small changes.

1. Use as little hot water as possible

Did you know that using warm water is the most environmentally damaging when cleaning? So try to minimize the use of (warm) water. All-purpose cleaner also works fine with cold water!

2. Don't clean too often

This one should sound like music to your ears: don't clean too often (intensively). Every cleaning session is more or less harmful to the environment. By keeping things tidy with a damp cloth, your house will stay clean for longer.

Extra tip: Dry the shower wall and tap after showering. This will save a lot of limescale and cleaning sessions.

3. Do not use microfiber cloths and scouring pads

Scourers leave behind small pieces of microplastics during each cleaning session, which are washed into the environment with wastewater. The same goes for microfiber cloths. Fortunately, there are now sustainable alternatives, such as dishcloths and scouring pads made from natural materials (such as bamboo or coconut fibers).

4. Hygienic wipes or not?

Hygienic wipes are super handy if you want to quickly clean your counter, table or toilet. One disadvantage: you throw them away immediately after use. By using wipes you save water compared to liquid cleaning agents. For a quick clean you can use them perfectly. Just choose wipes that are made of natural fibers.

5. Dispose of the packaging with the PMD waste

Is your cleaning bottle empty? Don't throw it in the residual waste, but in the PMD waste (Plastic, Metal, Drink cartons). This way the plastic can be recycled again.

Did you know! Our soapies are packaged in recycled and recyclable bottles. Recyclable means that the bottle can be recycled from the cap, ehhh … top to bottom, provided you throw it in the PMD waste!

6. Refilling

Even better than throwing away the bottle is refilling the bottle. This saves a lot of plastic. Marcel's Green Soap has refill bags for almost all cleaning products - from (washing) up liquid to all-purpose cleaner. These bags require less plastic than a bottle. With the all-purpose cleaner refill, you save 74% plastic compared to a new bottle.
